[edit] Panel Discussion: "Adopting Instructional Technology: Why or Why Not?"

Sarah Allen, Laura Blankenship, Jason Davidson, Steve Greenlaw, Jeff McClurken, Deborah Zies (UMW & Bryn Mawr)

Over the last decade, a plethora of new technologies have become available to support teaching and learning. These technologies extend the reach and depth of lectures, discussions, class preparation, fieldwork, laboratories, indeed nearly every pedagogy.

And yet, few faculty seem to be taking advantage of these technologies. Why is that? Technology is part of the broader question of instructional design. Academics are notoriously conservative about changing their professional practices. What do faculty value in their teaching? What do they hope their students will be able to know or do after taking their courses? Could technology help faculty better achieve their teaching goals? What makes some faculty willing to adopt teaching designs embodying instructional technology, while others are more reluctant? What can institutions do to facilitate teaching innovation in general and instructional technology in particular?

This session will explore these issues with a panel of faculty who have been chosen to represent a variety of teaching and technology experiences, from junior to senior faculty and from those who have adopted little or no technology in their teaching to those who have adopted technology wholesale.
