This presentation will describe the creation of a video mashup that the students of an Intermediate Italian class created as their final project for the course.
The discovery of a wealth of available footage on Internet Archive lent itself naturally to experimenting with images and subtitles. With minimal guidelines (that ensured usage of material offered by the Archive), students authored their own visual narratives and were subsequently asked to subtitle their shorts and dub them in Italian. The project was conceived and created in a relatively short amount of time (two weeks), but it proved to be an effective new format for the final examination, since it allowed me to assess the class’s linguistic skills in multiple areas of competence (oral, written and performative) while contextualizing language usage.
