New Media Consortium, 101
- Alan Levine, Vice President, NMC Community and CTO, New Media Consortium
In 2006, the University of Mary Washington joined the New Media Consortium-- and actually so did I! After working 14 years in instructional technology for an NMC member, the Maricopa Community Colleges, I joined the NMC staff. With both experiences, in this session you will learn more about the resources and opportunities available to UMW staff and faculty.

This will include:
- A tour and hands-on exploration of the new NMC web site (http://www.nmc.org/) - while avoiding any mention of "2.0" we have shifted from a static, staff only edited site, to one designed to offer user generated ocntent, folksonomy, and social presence features.
- See how the NMC Initiatives (http://www.nmc.org/initiatives) drive the organization
- Highlights from NMC's annual Summer Conference and twice a year online conferences (http://www.nmc.org/cal) See the 2006 Summer Conference video http://media.nmc.org/2006/06/nmc2006.mov
- A visit to the NMC Campus in Second Life (http://sl.nmc.org/) with an overview of oportunities available to UMW staff and students, as well as additional services available from NMC Virtual Worlds (http://virtualworlds.nmc.org/)
- Demonstration of Pachyderm (http://www.pachyderm.org/), the open source multimedia development tool developed under a grant managed by NMC. Each NMC member school can use 10 free accounts on the NMC hosted server.
- Highlights of the Horizon Project (http://www.nmc.org/horizon/), NMC's annual report on emerging technology. NMC members are welcome to be part of the advisory board for next year's process
NOTE: Parts of this presentation will allow participants to follow along on their computers. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops (or borrow one from the registration desk) and connect to the UMW wireless network.
