Faculty Academy is augmented throughout by your participation in its online components. We invite you to visit and contribute to our conference blog and wiki, and we encourage you to use the official Faculty Academy “tag” on your favorite social networking sites.
The Conference Blog
The conference blog can be found at www.facultyacademy.org and serves as a portal for the event. There you can:
- Find additional information about the event, the program, and the presenters.
- Watch the Faculty Academy Flickr photostream.
- Monitor the Faculty Academy del.icio.us bookmark stream.
Read the blog entries of participants who will be “live-blogging” the conference.
Conference participants are invited and encouraged to report and reflect on the conference sessions on their own blogs. If you plan on blogging Faculty Academy, and would like to have your posts re-published on the conference Web site, please read our instructions at www.facultyacademy.org/blog08/blog/add-rss. You can find instructions for setting up a blog at www.facultyacademy.org/blog08/need-a-blog.
The Conference Wiki
The conference wiki is at www.facultyacademy.org/wiki08. There you can:
- Read virtual handouts from presenters. You might start by browsing the program; each presentation is linked to a corresponding wiki page.
- Contribute your knowledge and insights to the sessions. Just click “edit” on any wiki page to add your own notes.
- Learn more about the presenters and presentations.
Conference Tagging
The official conference tag is UMWFA08. Use it at del.icio.us, Flickr, on your blog (as a category), or at your other favorite social networking site to help us capture conference resources and reactions. We’ll be monitoring the use of UMWFA08 throughout the conference, and beyond.
Want to learn more about social bookmarking, image sharing, and tagging? Check out our resource page at www.facultyacademy.org/wiki08/page/Tagging.
Wireless Access at Faculty Academy
Guest access to the UMW wireless network is available for all participants. For the duration of the Academy, the guest access session time is 10 hours (you are able to reconnect as often as needed). When you open your favorite web browser, you will be directed to an authentication screen. Simply scroll to the bottom of the screen and click “Guest Access.”
Loaner Laptops
Didn’t bring a laptop with you? Experiencing Web withdrawal? We feel your pain. Visit our registration desk and we’ll hook you up with a loaner laptop. We do require you to leave a driver’s license or university ID with our registration desk. Laptops are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Faculty Academy Webcasts
This year, we will be providing live and archived webcasts of many of the sessions at Faculty Academy. You can access live feeds at www.facultyacademy.org/blog08/webcast. Check www.facultyacademy.org after the conference for links to the archived videos.
Looking for One More Way to Stay Connected at Faculty Academy? Join Twitter!
This year, we invite all participants to establish accounts on Twitter and add “FacultyAcademy” as a friend. Twitter, is a simple, free service for staying connected with online friends. Throughout the conference, you can use Twitter to share your reflections on the conference proceedings. You can send updates to Twitter via the Web or many mobile devices. We’ve provided more information at www.facultyacademy.org/wiki08/page/Twitter. Look for our “TwitterCamp” display at the registration desk if you want to see what everyone is tweeting about at Faculty Academy!
We hope you’ll consider experimenting with some of these online tools during the conference. We believe Faculty Academy can be a wonderful opportunity to get your feet wet with Web-based services that foster communication, connection, and collaboration. If you have any questions about any of the services listed, please feel free to flag down anyone from DTLT for help!
