Hi Rachel - Enjoyed your talk - AND it shook / changed some of my core beliefs on “useful”, as opposed to “frivolous” ways to spend ones time - it could be a generational thing, as I’m an “aging baby-boomer”. I like the idea of role playing and entering a world with its own set of rules and hierarchy. As I mentioned, finding / rearranging one’s time is a critical factor.
On a lighter note - I couldn’t help but think of how much our two dogs - a standard poodle and chocolate lab - enjoy playing, biting, growling, teasing, taking turns being on top and bottom while wrestling. Perhaps they are in touch with something that some of us have lost along the way.
Good luck with your work and thanks for your presentation. Kevin
Kevin’s said very well many of the things I wanted to say. Great presentation, Rachel: thoughtful and inspiring. Thanks!
In a fresh move beyond the cliche of combat, Susana Ruiz, a University of Southern California grad student came up with a game that can give players a sense of what it’s like to be a refugee in Darfur. Check out the story on NPR:
